Corporate memory is not an uncommon term
What IS uncommon is what to do with it. As mentioned, you can’t turn all of your experts into trainers. However, you can turn your experts knowledge into training material through scenarios and decision making training. The post Decisions, Decisions, Decisions began with a firefighter facing an unknown situation, a situation not directly addressed in training. But what if that firefighter had heard of a similar situation from a retired firefighter, or a peer from the next town over?
Many organizations log incident reports.
Some have mandatory debriefs following an accident. After an aviation incident, the FAA sends in an investigative team to interview and understand what happened to hopefully prevent a similar incident from ever happening. Scenario based training is the same method for improving your workforce. Providing ways for newer or troubled employees to learn from your experienced, star employees is critical for employee improvement and quite simply, reducing human error.
